temporal bone

It is a paired bone, very complex, it is important because inside it is the hearing aid.

It is divided into 3 parts:

  • scaly
  • tympanic
  • petrosa

scaly part
  • Zygomatic Process – long arch that projects from the underside of the scale
  • Mandibular Fossa – articulates with the condyle of the mandible
Tympanic part
  • External Acoustic Meatus
Petrosa part (Pyramid)
  • Styloid Process – sharp spine located on the underside of the temporal bone
  • Mastoid Process – chronic projection that can vary in size and shape
  • Internal Acoustic Meatus – gives passage to the facial, acoustic and intermediate nerve and the internal auditory branch of the basilar artery
  • Stylomastoid foramen – located between the mastoid and styloid process
  • Carotid Canal – gives passage to the internal carotid artery and the carotid nerve plexus
  • Jugular fossa – houses the bulb of the internal jugular vein

The Temporal articulates with 5 bones: Occipital, Parietal, Zygomatic, Sphenoid and Mandible.
