It is a flat and irregular bone. It forms four cavities: the roof of the oral cavity, the floor and lateral wall of the nose, the floor of the orbit and the maxillary sinus. Each bone has a body and four processes.
Body
- Infra-orbital foramen – passageway for infra-orbital vessels and nerve
- Orbital Face – forms most of the orbital floor
- Maxillary Sinus – large pyramidal cavity within the body of the maxilla
Law Suit
- Frontal – strong blade that starts from the lateral limit of the nose
- Zygomatic – triangular and rough eminence located at the angle of separation of the anterior, infratemporal and orbital faces
- Alveolar – deep cavities for receiving teeth
- Palatine – horizontal and projects medially from the nasal surface of the bone
The Maxilla articulates with nine bones: Frontal, Ethmoid, Nasal, Zygomatic, Inferior Nasal Concha, Lacrimal, Palatine, Vomer and Maxilla on the opposite side.
