MUSCLES DA ARTICULAÇÃO TEMPOROMANDIBULAR – ATM

A articulação temporomandibular (ATM) responsável pelos movimentos da mandíbula (fonação, mastigação).

Articulation: Temporal bone mandibular fossa and mandible condyle head.

Main Movements:

Occlusion & #8211; Contact of the teeth of the upper arch with the lower arch.

Protrusion & #8211; It is a forward (forward) movement as occurs in the protrusion of the jaw.

Retrusion & #8211; It is a retraction movement (backward) as occurs in the retrusion of the mandible.

1. TEMPORAL

Temporal MuscleSource: External face of thunderstorm

Insertion: Coronoid process of the mandible and anterior aspect of the mandible branch

Innervation: Temporal Nerve (Trigeminal Mandibular Branch & #8211; V Cranial Pair)

Action: Elevation (Occlusion) and Retraction of the Jaw

2. MASSETER

Masseter muscleSource: Zygomatic Arch

Insertion:

Superficial fascicle: Jaw angle and branch

Deep fascicle: Branch and jaw coronoid process

Innervation: Masseteric Nerve (Trigeminal Mandibular Branch & #8211; V Cranial Pair)

Action: Elevation (Occlusion) of the Jaw

3. MEDIAL PTERIGOID

Source: Medial face of the lateral blade of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone

Insertion: Medial Face of Angle and Branch of Jaw

Innervation: Medial Pterygoid Nerve (Trigeminal Mandibular Branch & V Cranial Pair)

Action: Elevation (Occlusion) of the Jaw

4. SIDE PTERIGOID

Source:

Upper head: Larger wing of the sphenoid

Lateral Pterygoid MuscleLower Head: Lateral face of the lateral blade of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone

Insertion:

Upper head: Anterior face of the articular disc

Lower Head: Jaw condyle

Innervation: Lateral Pterygoid Nerve (Trigeminal Mandibular Branch & #8211; V Cranial Pair)

Action: Mouth Opening and Jaw Protrusion. Moves the jaw from side to side
