HAND MUSCLES

The muscles of the hand are grouped into 3 regions:

  • Lateral Palmar Region (Tenar)
  • Medial (Palmar) Region
  • Middle Palmar Region 
Lateral Palmar Region (Tenar) Medial (Palmar) Region

Thumb Flexor Short
Thumb Opponent
Thumb Adductor

Lateral Palmar Region (Tenar)

Thumb Abductor Short Muscle1. THUMB SHORT ABDUCER

Proximal Insertion: Scaphoid, trapezius and flexor retinaculum

Distal Insertion: Proximal Phalanx of the Thumb

Innervation: Median Nerve (C8 - T1)

Action: Thumb Abduction and Flexion

 

 

 

Thumb Flexor Short Muscle2. THIN SHORT FLEXOR

Proximal Insertion: Flexor trapezoid, trapezoid, capitate and retinaculum

Distal Insertion: Proximal Phalanx of the Thumb

Innervation: Median Nerve and Ulnar Nerve

Action: Thumb MF Flexion

 

Thumb Opponent Muscle3. Opponent of the Thug

Proximal Insertion: Flexor trapezius and retinaculum

Distal Insertion: 1st metacarpal

Innervation: Median Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Opposition (flexion + adduction + pronation)

Thumb Adductor Muscle4. THUMB ADDUCTOR

Medial Insertion: 2nd and 3rd metacarpal and capitate

Lateral Insertion: Proximal Phalanx of the Thumb

Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Thumb Adduction

 

Medial (Palmar) Region

Short Palmar Muscle1. SHORT PALMAR

Proximal Insertion: Palmar Aponeurosis

Distal Insertion: Deep layer of the hypothenar eminence dermis

Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Transverse folds in the hypotenar region

 

 

Low Abductor Muscle2. MINIMUM ABDUCER

Proximal Insertion: Pisiform and tendon of ulnar carpal flexor muscle

Distal Insertion: Proximal phalanx of the little finger

Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Low Finger Abductor

Minimum Opponent Muscle3. MINIMUM OPPONENT

Proximal Insertion: Hamate Hamule and Flexor Retinaculum

Distal Insertion: 5th metacarpal

Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Opposition of the Minimum

 

 

Short Flexor Muscle of the Minimum4. MINIMUM SHORT FLEXOR

Proximal Insertion: Hamate Hamule and Flexor Retinaculum

Distal Insertion: Proximal phalanx of the little finger

Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 and T1)

Action: Low Finger MF Flexion

Middle Palmar Region (11 Muscles)

Luminal MusclesLUMBRICALS (4 Muscles)

Proximal Insertion: Tendon of the deep flexor muscle of the fingers

Distal Insertion: Finger extensor muscle tendon

Innervation: Median Nerve (1st and 2nd) and Ulnar Nerve (3rd and 4th) (C8 and T1)

Action: MF flexion and IFP and IFD extension from 2nd to 5th fingers + finger proprioception


Palmar Interosseous Muscle

PALMAR INTEROSES (3 Muscles)

They act on the 2nd, 4th and 5th fingers
Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 - T1)

Action: Finger Adduction (approximates fingers)

 

 

Dorsal Interosseous MuscleDorsal Interests (4 Muscles)

Act from 2nd to 5th fingers
Innervation: Ulnar Nerve (C8 - T1)

Action: Finger Abduction (spread fingers)
